a sober observation...

recently saw a friend of mine, whom i haven't seen in years.

- you quit?
- yes, for good.
- good for you. but how do you manage?
- what do you mean?
- well, i couldn't live without my wine.
- really? that's does not sound too good. (smile)
- [unexpected pause] .. i mean socially, i'll just have a glass or two of wine.
- doesn't do anything for me. i used to like it, but something changed.

later that night... she went on to finish the bottle of wine and have who knows how many more drinks during the night as we went out.
(now, i am not judging by any means).
i just saw my past self so clearly. sure, i sustained a good life, good friends, i drank "socially"...which never meant 2 glass of wine on a certain occasion.

so somehow a bottle of wine a night (and then some), champagne for brunch the day after another bottle is gone... and in the course of a weekend the total consumption comes to about 4 bottles and not 4 glasses.

the observation is that people rationalize their drinking every which way. the quantities consumed are also usually much higher than we care to admit. and if i ever thought that there is such a thing as "drinking normally", i realize more and more that it's just another trick played by the AV.

p.s. yes, my grandmother drinks socially... she has half a glass of some wine or whatever maybe twice a year.

Hmm. It is definitely a thought to ponder on. A lot of the time I see people I used to use with. We will go through the same old routine of me saying I quit etc and then they will justify how much they use or how they are ok. I never say anything. I just hope that my new way of life and how much I have changed as a person convinces them to seek another way.

I have only been able to acknowledge to myself how much I actually drank after having quit.

When nurses and doctors admit patients we triple the amount they tell us they drink because mist people won't admit how much they drink......including myself....

Great post, Serious, I have had that conversation too.

-How do you manage without a drink or two at night after a day working in this place?
-Much better than with a drink or two, believe me - it just wasn't working out for me that way any longer.

And then I smile sweetly and change the subject.
