What does your therapist say to do when you feel like this Fitz?

Find something to ground you. Clutch a piece of ice, name thing around your room, tell yourself it is 2012 I am okay I am fine I am in my bedroom and I can see *insert list of things here* grounding can be really important when you're experiencing flashbacks. Loud music can also help keep you in the present moment.

Try taking some deep breaths and just focus on your breathing, count, listen to the sound of your breath as it goes in and out even talk to yourself, self soothe. Tell yourself I'm going to be okay, this will pass etc.

You can do this.

Try distracting yourself with a funny show or book.

And write down your feelings every time you feel anxious, try and identify what happened before you have an attack or flashback, it can help identify triggers, which can help you avoid them and learn to deal with them.

Best of luck. I hope you feel better soon!

When I was in college I worked with a 12 year old that had really severe PTSD and having her keep a diary really helped us identify triggers.

PS- I agree with Dee! I just have a degree in Psych but I did extensive research on PTSD & your therapist is taking the complete wrong approach!

I dunno...maybe you need to think about a new approach Fitz...maybe even a new counsellor?

You've been in a lot of pain lately - I'd hate to see that continue.

Fitz-you are not alone. I can hear you're in pain.
Maybe the way you handle this needs reviewing if its not working?
No one should have to live in fear of falling asleep. I'm wondering whether you need a complete re-evaluation of your meds, therapy approaches?
Stay safe, stay sober. You have many many friends here xxx

I'm sorry you're having a tough night MCF. I wish I had some good advice for you but I don't know much about PTSD. Hang I there, don't drink, stay on SR and hopefully you'll get some good advice, and yeah, maybe find another therapist who specializes in PTSD.

Fitz, I've been there, and if you want to talk you know where to find me. But be forwarned that I don't talk about this stuff, but I'm more than willing to listen and give you my comments. I served for just under 31 yrs and retired in 2006 so I don't think you'll be talking about anything I haven't already seen. It's up to you. It's 3:00 am here so I'm going to lie down now but I'll be back on again in a few hours cause I don't sleep much either.

If my therapist ever told me to soldier up it would also be the last time.

How's your PTSD flaring anymore tonight than any other night? I'm an OEF 06-07 OIF 08-09 Vet. I'm up if you need to talk to someone

Good morning EE: I see you live in PA. Doesn't the town of Hershey, PA smell just delicious?
