new to all of this

Starting day 3...woohoo! Not very deep into this whole sobriety thing, but I am definitely looking forward to it....when I'm not terrified of it. I've thought about "trying" to quit in the past, but this time I think I'll just quit. I realized that I've pretty much been drunk for a decade and that's a terrifying thought. Why is awareness so much scarier than oblivion??!?! Despite having a life that on the outside appears fantastic, I've been miserable. I feel like it's probably time to begin dealing with the underlying reasons for that unhappiness rather than just drinking a bottle of wine (I mean it's only four glasses...ugh, riiight). I finally understand that I cannot drink. Some people can, but I can't, so I won't. Staying optimistic and hoping this forum can be a little extra help!

Hi Susie,
I am on day 5 and totally know what you mean about awareness being scarier than oblivion. I am focusing on recovery as a new way of seeing life and know that the further I get, the more clearer I will see. Glad to see you here

Thanks Sapling and quitforme79! It's definitely helpful to know there are others dealing with similar issues.

Hi Suzy, welcome to the team, and congratulations on your decision to stop drinking. That one choice did so much for me. My depression and anxiety lifted, I felt empowered again, full of optimism and desire to get healthy in every way. I learned that it is possible to leave the guilt and shame behind me, and get on with things in an honest way.

There are lots of stories here of folks that have done just as you have done - they quit drinking! Believe in yourself, you have resources that haven't been touched yet. Keep posting, there is a lot of support for you here.

I finally understand that I cannot drink. Some people can, but I can't, so I won't.
It took me a long while to come to that understanding, Susie, but when I did, something changed - I stopped struggling, accepted I was going to be sober forever, and got on with my life. I'm so glad you're at that understanding now.

Welcome to SR it's good to have you here. There's much support here and tons of encouragement. Read around and post as much as you like - it really does help.

All the best to you.
