The "ISMS" of Alcoholism
The "ISMS" of Alcoholism
So, of course, there are the observable behaviors, results or "isms" of active, excess drinking. Over time, they can include one or more of these: arrests, blackouts, cirrhosis, drunkenness, hangovers, intoxication, neglect, violence, vomiting ... Physical sobriety stops most of that.
But, Alcoholism minus Alcohol = ism, still. As I've heard it said at meetings, those remaining "isms" can lead one straight back to active alcoholism or addiction.
What are those "isms"? Is there a behavioral, clinical or practical definition or list? Is there some helpful resource or writing on the "isms"? How have those "isms" been described to you? What are some helpful reminders of the "isms," like the following?
ISM = I Self-will Me (this one being at the very core)
ISM = I Sponsor Myself (custom, Me-comfy, not a true 12 Step program)
ISM = I Skip Meetings (same)
ISM = I Sabotage Myself (in what ways?)
ISM = Incredibly Short Memory (of what?)
ISM = Impatience Selfishness Manipulation
ISM = Internal Spiritual Malady
Are those actual "isms"?
What are all the "isms" that must be conquered in recovery?

My alcoholism, not being able to live without drinking. It had little to do with how much or how often, it's that I "needed" alcohol to feel okay with me and the world around me.
Working through the steps helped me immensely.
Are you working on those steps?
