the big book is a great solution. I read the stories, sometimes several in one sitting. Another good one is Living Sober, which I know in NYC is given free when you go to an AA meeting (not sure you have that option?).
Also, maybe you can read the stories of people on here - there is a forum where people write what is what like before getting sober, and what it is like now.

I'm not sure how to link it to here but will send another post after I figure that out.
