so I went to the E.R and they checked all my signs and gave me some vitamins, and I finally fell asleep, sweet beautiful needed sleep, then I was woken up by a doctor who did some tests and they sent me home. they gave me a list of detox centers that I have already called and sent me on my way. I guess I'm going to have to just ween myself off there are no other options. I'll call some centers in the morning and I'm gonna try to get a couple hours of sleep tonight

I'm not sure I understand, were the tests not to check if you were okay to detox at home? Did they tell you that you had to carry on drinking?

it makes me sad that you are being turned away and discouraged at these places that are to provide help (detox, rehab, etc) what about social services, or, if it was me, i would go to the nearest church, and if whoever is there doesnt seem to get it, go to the next one. if your area is like mine, there is a church on every block. one for every bar! God bless you and please dont give up.

My friend went to the ER like 3 different times overnight (he doesn't have insurance) for health emergencies caused by drinking. They didn't detox him and sent him home telling him not to stop drinking, because it was too dangerous. He finally found a hospital that took him in for detox. He was there for 5 days. It changed his life, but it was really hard for him to find help. he says it was a miracle that he found this place. he was literally on his knees crying out to God to for help. I think he is like 2 months sober now. He has a job too.

Anyhow, keep asking people and calling around about any leads you get, put yourself on the waiting list(I think you have). Like others have said. It is better that you get in in 4 weeks then never, right? Just keep posting, reading, and going to meetings during that time, OK?

It blows that is is so hard to get help. but don't give up on yourself; we wont

Hugs,
MC

I'm telling you, I went there they put an intervenes in my arm, took my blood pressure, checked me out with a stethoscope, gave me a vitamin pill and then they sent me home. I can't find help anywhere I have called crisis lines and detoxes and I can't find help. I called a hospital in vancouver to and they said they couldn't help me because hospitals don't do that. I haven't slept for days because I'm to afraid to and I just want to find someone to monitor me but I have no one at my house.... this really sucks. please tell me what to do

My doctor did the same with me, he said I wasn't actively withdrawing and sent me home. Did they say anything to that effect? Or did they say don't stop drinking til you find a safe place to detox?

Have you drunk anything since you left the hospital?

they gave me a pamphlet with a list of detox centers, I called everyone one on the list but have had no luck, I have drank since I left. every time I start getting the shakes really bad I have 1 beer, I have not been drunk since I left but if the withdrawals get overwhelming I have 1 8% beer, I have probably had 1 every 2 hours. I should have asked more questions but the doctors was really busy with other patients. Anyways I am doing a pretty good job tapering off right now but my only concern is that if I sleep I won't be able to drink a beer if the symptoms kick up. I have even contemplated setting an alarm clock for every hour, but I am trying to find a friend who will come to my apartment and he can just chill on the couch and watch t.v or something while I sleep. I have only had 4 hours of sleep in the last 3 days and the sleep deprivation is adding more pain to an already terrible experience

Sounds to me like they felt you weren't in any danger Julius.

I hope you find a detox soon before you're back up to normal drinking levels.

If you feel they didn't do enough for you, maybe it's worth spending the money to see a GP even?

Could you just go to your normal doctor in the morning and talk about maybe getting some help for a home detox? It sounds like that is still a lot of beer and I don't think you can avoid the unpleasant symptoms as you cut it down.

That has to be frustrating..... I think I'd get on a waiting list and continue to call around, maybe talk to an addiction doctor, someone in mental health services or even government services(?). There's a lot of stuff online (like the link below - there's some 24-hour help lines too)..... I know how it is though - sometimes you have to be pretty persistent to get what you need.

sorry we seem to have a cultural divide Julian, lol.

General Practitioner = family Dr.

maybe artsoul is right tho - an addiction specialist might be best?

UPDATE I just got off the phone with a guy from Vancouver Detox and I broke down and told him I haven't slept for days out of fear of withdrawals, he said he would be right back he was going to talk to a nurse. Then he said you can pack your bags Julian we have a spot available for you. Thanks you tremendously for all of your support. I will talk to you in 5-10 days

Great news Julian, hope it goes well and you get off it.

But when you do, you know there some tough calls to be made, I think you know what has to be done.

As Dee told me 3 weeks ago ' time to face facts my friend'

Make a plan and stick to it.

All the best

Wonderful news!! My hope is that you read this when you get back, and that you remember you NEVER have to be where you were again. Once you are detoxed, you never have to withdrawal again if you don't drink.

I am so glad you have a solution to what sounds like hell. Peace friend.
