Almost 1 week!

I decided to quit drinking (and smoking) when I woke up last Tuesday. So far so good. I think the cravings for cigarettes are actually more intense, than the desire to drink.

For years, I have been drinking a handle of rum a week. I did not seem to have a shutoff switch. I wouldn't drink every day, but just about every other day. I still do not want to admit I am an alcoholic, I think because I work fulltime, take care of my house and three kids, coach their soccer teams, participate in charity, etc...that there is no way an alcoholic could do that....BUT I DID.

I realized I had to quit because of my health. As a hyprocrite, I would go to the gym and workout 3-4 times a week...while still maintaining my drinking/smoking addictions. Eventually it caught up to me. I'd wake the day after drinking and have heart palpitations, which would in turn lead to horrible anxiety attacks. On one occasion I was ready to go to the emergency room!

So my decision is made and 6 days are under my belt. My main withdrawal symptom is depression...i feel that my life is no longer 'fun'. Physically, I have been feeling pretty good....even played tennis with my son yesterday! I haven't been able to wake up at 4:30 for the gym last week, but I feel that my energy level will eventually bounce back.

I hope to get to know some others (and moms!) who have joined this community too!

Both drinking and smoking at the same time? That's impressive!

Welcome to SR spydermary

I gave up drinking and smoking at the same time too (5 months ago now ). I also had horrible anxiety because of my drinking. It's really nice to be free of that.

If you still feel like you're missing out though...have you heard of Allen Carr's Easy way to stop drinking. It's quite a useful book to get rid of any feelings of deprivation.

Glad you're here x

Thanks for welcoming me! I am on day 9 now! My kids remind me too, they understand the dangerous road I was headed down. Now I have free time in the evenings for board games, puzzles and family time

Welcome SpyderMary-very impressive to quit both at once. I'm having a hard enough time with one lol I bet your kids are thrilled to have more of your attention and time!
