Congratulations on 6 months. It takes up to 18 months for our central nervous system to fully recover once we dry out. At 6 months, you're probably 80% there, but things continue to improve.
As to "new," I think when we are comfortable and can convince ourselves that we have this covered that we are most vulnerable. Good for you to go back to school, don't let the past dictate your future... that kind of worldview is a lot like how we lived in active addiction.
