Serenity prayer and day one

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.

I have this prayer on my kitchen wall. It is on a counted cross stitch that my grandmother made. (And I am no spring chicken, so it is really old!) Recently, someone said, you know that that is the AA prayer don’t you?

I did not know that.

I went several days last week without drinking, but fell for the delicious cabernet that was served with the steak we had. OOPS.

I am on another day one. I know I need courage to change my evening wine ritual. Surely, with help from The Big Guy I CAN change my behavior. (I do have great faith and completely believe in a higher power!)

Yup, I think The Big Guy can be quite a help, if sought.

Here is a link some history on the serenity prayer. -------> http://www.aa.org/en_pdfs/smf-129_en.pdf

First

And yes I am a AAer but have my own HP, and god of My understanding. But I do say this the Serenity Prayer every morning in my meditation in full. I love the second half which often gets so overlooked.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace;
Taking as he did,this, this sinful world
As it is, not, as I would have it;
Trusting that he will make all things right
if I surrender to his will.;
That I may be reasonable happy in this life
And Supremely happy with him
Forever in the Next.
Amen.

I just felt the calm over me as I typed it, welcome to a wonderful journey.

Thank you IndaMiricale for the second half of the prayer. I'm going to put it on a little card to keep it in my pocket. I'm sure I will refer to it frequently over the next few days!
Thanks!

Welcome benice!

I was familiar with the serenity prayer long before I knew it was an AA thing. My father had it on the wall.
I use it frequently today...

be mindful of situations in which you know you will be tempted. heck, i'm on guard if i go to an Italian restaurant because they're infamous for offering you a sample of wine before your water glass gets touched. be as aware of your surroundings as you can be and always be mindful. you've got this! welcome to SR!

Hello Benice,
Some days I say the serenity prayer many times. I think it keeps me sane by giving me hope and also calms me down when I start to get upset over something stupid. It works for me and I 'll bet it will work for you too.
1 day at a time.
