Just joined SR
Hello,
Last week was the first time I typed in "alcoholic" into my search engine. Wow, that was hard for my ego. I'm still hiding all this from my wife and kids. I don't want them to challenge or dismiss the issue, because it would just be all too easy to give in. Tried to quit last week, but broke down thinking I really didn't have a problem. Re-started my commitment Sunday after waking up in the middle of the night to finish off a 12 pack I started earlier that evening. This is my third day without drinking. Physically doing good. Did have a racing heart, sweats, sleeplessness, exhaustion. But, last night was a good rest. I know the mental battle is going to start soon, so I joined SR for support or at least to be around others who understand. Don't want to over think too much, so for now, today is good.

Hi Todayisgood,
Welcome. I can relate to your struggle. I recall countless efforts to quit on my own and no success. Today Im sober, free and happy for 4 years. Youll find a wide variety of folks on here who have stopped drinking in a variety of ways. I did and still do it through AA. It has been the best thing that has ever happened to me.
Hope you find some help!

Welcome! I too have a hard time with the term "alcoholic." And found myself in your position just a few weeks ago. SR has helped me immensely. A lot of advice and understanding. Something I don't have in real life. I think only alcoholics understand.
It's a tough thing when you take the blinders off and start realizing you've become a drunk. It was for me. I was in denial for years, figured I could handle it, I was no worse off than people I knew and better off than many people, but still--I was much worse off than many, many people. I was a drunk. And that was a terrible thing to realize.
But it was great. Because, by that realization, I finally gained power to make a change. You can't fix a problem you can't identify or won't let yourself accept, but once you are certain of the cause of the problem you can take steps to fix it.
Denial is a huge obstacle to progress.
Good luck

Welcome TodayIsGood! You'll find a lot of inspiration and help here. I was here for too short a time around a year ago, and am back to try again. I agree with you on the overthinking part, but we may have to deal with a lot more thinking than we want to I think we can all agree, a day without alcohol is a good one!
Welcome TodayisGood -
The mental part was still there when I got sober, too - it took some time for that to go away, but it really does get better the longer you stay sober. There's a lot of inspiration, ideas and support here that will help you stay motivated.
Good to have you!

Welcome to SR there's so much support, understanding and experience here. We're all behind you!
Don't worry too much about labelling yourself this or that at this point, just focus on being sober. That's the most important thing. Good luck and I wish you all the best on your journey.
