Here it comes..
Hey,
all day today I have been telling myself, your not stopping at store tonight. No beer, thats it today is day one.
Now I find myself saying, just one or two, no big deal.
Im not gonna let it tell me what to do. I just hate the thoughts. Its like I know I dont want it but my AV is saying go ahead, one or two aint gonna kill you. Then it says, what happens when you get home and you have no beer in you. Your gonna be bored and thinking about it! What a terrible thing alcohol is!
Sorry, Just Venting!

You are in control of your own body. If you don't want to drink, DON'T DO IT. The AV is a tricky little thing, but ultimatley you are the one that has to OVERCOME it. The longer you give into it, the longer it will take to get sober. It does get easier!!!

Hunter,
Okay, we are all human. However today make it your day 1!!! You can do it!
Don't stop at any stores. Don't entertain any reason to stop by someplace that sells alcohol. I promise, your AV is smart enough to try to put you in a place like that during your witching hour! I know mine is!
Instead go to the gym. Go watch a movie. Go to Walmart. Go do SOMETHING that does not involve alcohol.
Really, you can do it.

Yup, mine used to (and sometimes still does) happen at around 4 to 430pm with it peaking at about 6pm. After that it just fades. I used to think if I could just get past that time I'd be good.
Still to this day, when I have a bad moment I just think to myself "just get past this next few minutes, this next hour, go do something, work in the garden, have an espresso, have a chocolate, have a cookie, go walk and check the mail. Something. ANYTHING. Just get past this moment. For it too shall pass. And it always did. And I'd still be sober.

Here's a simple recovery tool (STOP THOUGHT) that can help you get past that witching hour.
Being recovered from addiction is a skill anybody can learn. And you can do this!
Being recovered from addiction is a skill anybody can learn. And you can do this!
I used to have to break mine down by the hour, 5-6, go for a walk, start dinner, 6-7 finish dinner prep and eat dinner, 7-8, eat dinner clean kitchen, 8-10, TV time or reading. 10 PM bedtime. You start staring down that clock at the end of the day but you must STRUCTURE your time! Boredom is one of our greatest enemies. Idleness will lead us to the bottle just as quickless as depression and peer pressure. And really, it feels like a silly reason to drink. It's probably my second worst trigger though. Drives me bonkers. Remember too that your body is not a slave to your cravings. You controle your legs and your legs do not need to walk you to the liquor store. Post here first, post here often! Glad you're back. Bust through that craving and it'll get easier. One you exert your willpower and find that you really do have it, it's just a matter of working it out. You can do it. I believe in ya! Believe me, i was in a sorry state when i sobered up. My signature is the truth.

In the early days I went through minature peppermint patties like crazy. Those were my "fix". Good news is those are so low in calories that they really didn't make a dent in my calorie intake. LOL
Zencat,
I kind of did that in my early days. I didn't really think "STOP THOUGHT" but I would reach for another peppermint patty, unwrap it, savor it while wandering out into the garden, look at the plants, or simply come on here, talk a bit. An hour later the witching hour was gone.

The urge is not you. The urge exists apart from you. You cannot fight it, but you can accept it, you can ignore it, you can laugh and point at how pathetic it is. The urge can't move your feet, or bend your elbow. You are in control because you have that ability, not your urge. Like Zencat, wise cat that he is, tells us, anyone can learn this. Just believe that you can do it, and the rest will follow.
