Good evening everyone. My name is Alan I'm 30 and I am from England. I am 7 months sober but I have joined this site as recently I have had those thoughts of "maybe I could have just 1 drink" creeping into my head.

Of course I know full well it will never be just one as once I have one I do not stop until I am unconscious. It is strange how quickly we seem to forget the hell that alcohol puts us through, and that's what I'm here to remind myself of.

Any enough rambling, I'm off to look around the site.

When I first heard...."It's the first drink that makes you drunk"
I thought it was so silly and untrue.
Who were these AA members? Social drinkers?

I knew it would take me more...and more and more...
I stayed around....found recovery and no longer compare but identify.

Hi Alan! The 'I'll just have one' thing kept me drinking for many years. I was determined I could use willpower to control myself. I almost lost my life proving it was impossible. Apparently I'm one of those with no 'off' switch.

Glad you are here with us. It feels so much better doing this with people who really understand. Congratulations on your 7 months, Alan.

Hello Alan! Congratulations - that's fantastic. Good for you.

I think SR is a great place for us to be reminded that we will never, ever be able to take that first drink. There's so much knowledge and support here, and it definitely helps to be reminded of what we went through and to never, ever have to do it all again.

Thanks for the warm welcome I am not planning on drinking I have tried to quit, then just have the one before. And before I know it I have been drinking every day for 5 months

I was talking to an older guy the other day after a meeting...He has 31 years sober. He told me he got to six years sober his first time...And he stopped doing what he was doing and decided it would be OK to have a couple beers at a Christmas party. He went back to AA and he told his wife....That was the worst six months of my life....She told him...You've been drinking for two years....He didn't even know it. They say it's powerful...I guess so.
