Drinking for England

Hi I,m Jim (38) and I like a drink. Infact when I start I can't stop untill I'm asleep, sick or both.

Before that happens I get abusive to my partner and behave terribly. I have lost my driving licence twice and been arrested a few times for being drunk and abusive. I have been drinking heavily since I was 15.

When I'm sober I'm a caring father and partner with loads of interests and hobbies. I love animals and the country side, sailing, travelling around Europe on my motorcycle and organising bike rallies. Unfortunately all of these end with a drink at the end of the day.

I have decided I can't carry on hurting the very people that are loving me and watch me kill myself with booze and fags.

I'm not drinking today and tomorrow and hopefully one day I'll wake up and it wont hurt anymore. I don't know how but maybe just one day it could happen. That day will be the richest day of my/our lives.

Thanks for listening

AA will be able to help you with that wish, Jim. All the best.

My first bike in '66 was a '65 BSA Lightning Rocket.

Welcome to SR jimuk, your post title caught my attention.

I had the comment "she can drink for England" directed at me very often. It is not like that for me today.

Wishing you well.

One day at a time; one step at a time. I think you may already be on your way.

Thanks live2Run25 and 2grandaughters.

I,ve been checking local meeting times, going to get to one this week. Spoken with my partner she is very supportive, so looks like it's upto me now with a little help.

Good taste there with the BSA :-)

Welcome Jimuk!

I remember thinking about the future, too, about my family and what would happen if I didn't stop drinking. At the same time, I couldn't imagine a life without it and didn't have much confidence in myself to stop. I finally took the leap, though, based on the hope and inspiration I found here. I'm so glad I did - life is good today!

Just lean on us - things will get better. Glad you're here!

Thank you all, this is day 1 and I've been feeling hungover after a rough night with my head down the wc.

You know I'm almost getting excited at the thought of a future without the poison ruining my body, life and family. I hope I'm still positive tomorrow.

Good luck to us all.

Hi Jim, today is my first day, I have two young children and a husband and I let them down with promises, if I stay sober now my children won't remember and I can prove to my husband he means the world to me, i can't just have one drink, I get steaming till I can't remember the last few hours. Tomorrow is going to be the test for me, although I have thought about it today I got drunk last night, it's always day two that I crave it real bad. Good on u for being sober all this time

Hi Jen, I'm still battling. After many day 1s I'm now 9 days sober.
Reading this post again has strengthened my resolve to win this battle.
luckily my wife and son are still with me and we are still strong.
congratulations on day 1 and welcome to SR. It's the best plc to be once we admit our problems.

I've tried to moderate or just drink on a Friday, I've kidded myself I can go for one beer then go home. The truth is I've never gone for one beer, I can't. It always ends in the same revolving nightmare.

Same here, just end up getting hammered. Enough is enough, I really need to address myself for my family, before it gets any worse (if it can)
