When I told my friends that I was an addict and was not drinking anymore they were overwhelmingly supportive. They avoided suggesting going out to bars or even ordering wine with dinner. Finally I just had to tell them to drink in front of me---that I was not going to fall apart.
They really have been the strongest support I have had. Because they are not addicts/alcoholics they understand "normal" and are a great reality check. As I was told in rehab, you don't want to ONLY have recovering alcoholics as friends in your life. Everyone needs to have different kinds of people supporting them.
I think most non-alcoholic friends will be glad to do what they can to help you in this early stage.
