AA meeting that has changed my life
I think that is fantastic Jeni. My experience was much the same. In retrospect, it was almost when I stopped focusing on what I didn't want to be (dependent on alcohol and having to walk thru AA's doors)and shifted my focus to what I did want to be (to have a fulfilling life free from the shame of my addiction), things changed for me.
I'll admit I was a bit fearful and suspicious when I walked through those doors, and was absolutely ashamed that I HAD to walk through those doors.
When I shifted the focus from "what I was" to "where I'm going", things clicked for me, too. I love the roadmap AA provides us in how to get from here to there.
The beauty of it all was that I didn't have to wait to reach the "top of the mountain" to enjoy the benefits of early sobriety. The "clicking" that occurred for me was in the daily reprieve I was given by not picking up that bottle and replacing it with a different mindset. No matter how rotten a day or a craving can be, the thought that one day those would be matters behind me was a great relief, and that I could find something in the day that I could be grateful for; no matter how bad. Every day without a drink was good enough for me as I got started.
Enjoy the journey!
