What to do if going to a BYOB party
There is no way I am picking out some wine for someone. I would start obsessing about tasting it. I love these San pellegrino blood orange canned drinks. They are fancy and more importantly, nonalcoholic.
Chances are, people won't notice. You just feel weird and that is normal.

I'd go to the party and bring with me a big case of specialty sodas, like
Limonata or Orangina.
I certainly wouldn't go buy alcohol in early recovery. That's just not a good idea.
You don't owe your clients an explanation of why you aren't drinking alcohol.

the last outdoor party i went to, there were different coolers..one filled with flavored waters, fizzy water, fruity drinks...and this one was the MOST popular..not everyone drinks a lot, it was so hot, the non-alcoholic cooler kept having to be replenished.
there is a huge variety of good flavored stuff at the grocery store..fancy to cheaper. i'm willing to bet if you bring a case of this, it will be appreciated by many others too.

Flavored iced teas and vitamin water, all the new flavors of Gatorade, there are SO many beverages that people drink these days that are perfect for a gathering.
It's short sighted to assume that WE are the only people not boozing!

There are some who just don't drink, not because they have a problem, but because they don't like it or don't care to. There are some who have to drive and wouldn't risk drinking anything. There are some who might be on medication or might have to get up early the next day or whatever. And there are some who will only have a couple of drinks and will want something else to drink too...they won't have a beer in their hand the entire time.
We tend to focus so much on alcohol when we are drinking and then it seems so many focus on it equally as much when getting sober. Alcohol isn't everything.
I think in situations like this a person recovering from addiction feels insecure and feels like other people will see that. The alcoholic is so focused on their "problem" and "not drinking" that they feel like other people will see their internal struggle and it scares them.
When the reality is, it's all in the head of the addict.
