Going to bookstore. What books have helped you?

I am going to the bookstore in a bit. I am going to pick up a few books to help me in my recovery. What books have helped and how did they help you?

Looking for books other than the "Big Book" and "Rational Recovery"

Thank you for any suggestions

Thanks Deserto. I read your post on the May forum, that's what got me going. You are awesome. B&N has "The easy way to stop drinking" but not the others. I will be ordering online a few as well.

My wife and I read quite a few of the Hazelden books daily.
I really like Earnie Larson's "Believing in Myself".
Any of Melody Beattie's I find very good as well.

Are you going to AA? You may want to talk to your sponsor before getting literature if you are.

All the best.

Actually read the whole thing TODAY.
Every alcoholic needs to read this book!
I am glad I did!

2GD,
Thanks, I will look for them.
No I'm not doing AA. I am using this site for my guidance. I am doing well, over 2 weeks. I feel great, but know I need to work hard. If I EVER relapse again, AA is the next step for me because I know how much it has helped others.

Even if you're not doing AA The Big Book is still a good read.

HRB70, have you googled and read AA's "How It Works" and "The Doctor's Opinion" ?

Can you identify with them?

I wish you the best in your recovery quest.

2GD,
No I have not. They are more books to add to the list. How did they help you?

I am really looking for inspirational books. I made a plan to Never drink again and to never change my mind. I know I can do this. Well I hope I can do this...Damn that self doubt that pops in. That's what I am looking to fix, without meetings (And please don't take this wrong because I mean no harm) and without the church. I know I was born with the power to control my own life and to fix what is going wrong with it.

No book has helped me more than the 12 and 12. Recovery is all about examining "causes and conditions". What leads me to believe that the answers to lifes problems
are contained in a bottle? Especially when it has been repeatedly proven that pouring liquor on it doesnt fix it. All recovery is good recovery - just my humble opinion.
Keep at it, just put one foot in front of the other! One day at a time! Hope you find a book to enjoy!

'How It Works' and 'The Doctors Opinion' are also in the BB, HRB....

Outside of the AA/RR nexus, I liked Drinking: A Love Story by Caroline Knapp.
It's a memoir - but it really resonated with me.

That may be where the problem lies ....

Please read the "How It Works" and "The Doctor's Opinion". 2 pages (not books) that briefly describe AA's take on our condition.

I wish you the best in your recovery.

Sigh. I just went to the bookstore and found a book about Alcohol and Addiction Cure by Passages Recovery Center (or something like that). I was so excited to start reading it but first I checked on Amazon and they were all dissing it as a big informercial to get me to pay $50k a month to check in to a clinic in California. Is it really that bad?

I think it is. Its basically an infomercial (and it may have actually been sold that way at one time).

2GD, thanks, I will definitely read them. I am not agains taking what I can from any program and making it a partof my recovery.

Uninvited, see what people on here say about it, read a few pages...take it back if it's wrong. I know seeing the commercials on tv scared me away from it. But that was just a gut instinct, not based on any real knowledge. Let me know if it is good and not just a sales pitch.

I wonder if they realize I don't have $50k

Ah what the heck I'll try to read it and see how bad it is...

"Cosmic Ordering" by Jonathan Cainer

really got me thinking about how I perceive my relationship with myself, my desires and the Universe, which are at the root of my substance abuse issues.
