Don't let the Bastards Grind You Down - 50 things every alcoholic and addict in early recovery should know.
Just a short one, easy reading, and kinda AA based but I learnt alot from it, and alot about AA too x

The book Alcoholics Anoymous is frre online and free in an audio version. The AA books can be bought at a low cost at most AA meetings or from the local intergroup office. That is the phone number found when you search AA city state.
Rational Recovery is available through it's website.
That "alcohol cure" book is NOT a good read, it makes you want to drink (gives ya a craving).
I wish you well! There is a book forum if you scroll to the bottom of the page.

HRB - Awesome to hear that ya got it... let me know what you think! Skip to pages (yes, I am a cheater) 98 - 116 first "The Early Stages - The Deteriorative Stage". I cried. This hit me like a TON of bricks right to the chest! Actually the WHOLE book I found myself nodding and talking out loud! And yes there is a sequel Beyond the Influence but I have yet to read it. Heard it was great too.
The Big Book is available online free and at amazon used for very cheap. Think I paid close to just shipping on mine.
If you are going to use AA (even if you are not) invest in The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions..live by em. They really are a good tool.
Drinking, A Love Story is GREAT too! Hit close to home for me for sure.
Looks like everyone gave ya a great place to start

Update on "The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure". Quote from page 41 - "You'll read in detail about our three-step approach in Chapter Six, including how to put together your own support team of doctors, therapists, and specialized health practicioners..."
I need to build my own medical team? Does not sound promising...

I read the 'Alcohol and Addiction Cure' right before I got sober. I found it very informative, even if I didn't buy into everything it said. It is written by the owners of the Passages Recovery Center....which, as you correctly stated is costly. I still think the book is worth a read. So is:
Leave the Light On, Jennifer Storm
The Long Run, Mishka Shubaly ( Kindle Single )
Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher
(my favorites are still Dry, and Drinking a Love Story)

"Basketball Junkie" The Chris Herren Story
"Drinking, A love story" by Caroline Knapp
Currently reading "Beyond Belief" by Jose Hamilton the center fielder for the Texas Rangers and I cant put it down.

HitRockBottom,
I totally agree with you that we have the ability to make changes in our lives that we need, in order to recover. Books have been a huge help for me in my recovery, and continue to guide me on my path to this day.
'A Return to Love' by Marianne Williamson
'A Course in Miracles' by Marianne Williamson
'The Seat of the Soul' by Gary Zukav
'A New Earth' by Eckhart Tolle

Caroline Knapp's book is hands down the best I've read.
I also read Pete Hamill's book.
Elizabeth Wurtzel wrote a good book about getting sober - More Now Again is what it is called I believe? Although her active in addiction chapters were very difficult to read.
Smashed, Story of A Drunken Girlhood also resonated with me.
I enjoyed Lit by Mary Karr and Dry as well.
Now for the negatives, I did not really enjoy Mommy Doesn't Drink Here Anymore or The Sobering Truth by Jeff Herten - neither really resonated with me, although both were easy reads. Not bad by any means, but not something I'd recommend.
