Memoirs of Recovery

Hi all,

I am currently reading (for the 4th time) Drinking: A Love Story, by Caroline Knapp, about her alcoholism and recovery. I find it so helpful and validating - I just love this book.

I am a big fan of memoirs and would love any suggestions for books about addiction and recovery. Thanks in advance

I like memoirs too. I've read Carolines many times! Another good one is Augusten Burrough's "Dry".

I've read it several times, too. It's my favourite.

I really liked 'Untied' by Meredith Baxter.

'Lips Unsealed' by Belinda Carlisle

"A Lucky Man" by Michael J. Fox

'Prairie Tales' by Melissa Gilbert

'I Want' by Jane Velez-Mitchell

'After All' by Mary Tyler Moore

'A Glad Awakening' by Betty Ford

'Moving Pictures' by Ali McGraw

'Clapton' by Eric Clapton

I read Pete Hamill's A Drinking Life when it first came out around 1995, and remember liking it quite a lot. It could particularly resonate with men.

Apparently it didn't resonate enough with me, though I didn't sober up for another 6 years at the time...

I remember reading Drinking A Love Story mid 90s and thinking "good lord, this woman was a crazy major alchy." I couldn't relate at all to most of the things in the book. Well flash forward twelve years and I read it again and sure enough I could completely identify with a lot of the things she did. Reading the book again really hit home to showed me how alcoholism truly is a progressive disease.

I loved "I want" by Jane Velez-Mitchell. There are also a few books at bookstore in recovery section that are compilations of short stories on addiction and recovery. I love to read whatever I can get my hands on!
