This is a really rough Weekend!!

Vigilant.... alertly watchful especially to avoid danger

That's the word for this weekend. Pay close attention to people, places and things!!...This is one of those weekends that is geared for drinking...Be EXTRA careful with what situations you put yourself into...If you don't have the first drink....You won't need the second...And so on. Think sobriety first....If you aren't comfortable where you are...Remove yourself. Hang on to what you got people!!!

Thankyou! I remember my first sober summer, how I felt I was missing out on something. We know that's a lie, but those old habits die hard.

You're right, if I have a drink, I'll have at least five, probably more. Then I'll drink tomorrow, then Monday ...

Yes, Luling - that's how it would be for me, too. There's no such thing as 'just a beer'.

I agree with you all. If I have one, I will drink for weeks. So instead I drink a lot of water, new habit that really helps.

It is a tough weekend. The first weekend of summer, and it's acting like summer. Last year, I had caved long before this, in April. Then, I drank the summer away, and stopped again in early August. No way will that happen this summer. But, I will tell you, today was a dog day where I live, and that usually meant lapping up plenty of beer. It was on my mind when I was driving through the haze, and things kind of slowed down to that bright, hot summer slo-mo feeling. I think I may have even had a little flashback high. But I stayed strong...so far. I've come too far to cave now. I don't want to have to repeat all that I've invested to date, or to go back to that early struggle I see so evident here and in AA. That thought keeps me sober.

One of the places I spend alot of time at is very, hot...100 plus...one thing that helps me now, instead of the dreaded beer, ice cold seltzer, it's cold, it's fizzy, not sweet...can add juice whatever for flavor...really takes the edge off and it tastes good/fairly healthy...

Thumbs up

When I have a craving (mental obsession!) ...

I drink some organic carrot, orange, or apple juice. A big glass.

The sugar helps, and I feel happy I drank something that was good for myself.

Take time to nourish yourself. I think there is some truth to that if we have a weakened state of mind and body,

that we might be more succeptible to cravings (obsession).

I am sure everyone has heard this one too....

HALT

Don't let yourself get to hungry, angry, lonely or tired.

Thank you sapling,I always remember I must always be vigilant. When I was going on my first sober holiday an old timer told me that and I have never forgotten it.

One of the themes for a meeting at the AA convention in Greece last weekend was S.L.I.P.Sobriety loses its priority,I had never heard that before.Excellent.

I heard someone say "drinking is a conscious decision to become unconscious."

Thanks for the really helpful post, Sapling. It needed to be said out loud, that this weekend is so strongly associated with drinking, and vigilance will be our saving grace. This will be my first sober summer, and definitely my biggest trigger time. No doubt, there are countless others in the same boat, struggling to navigate the uncharted waters.
Here's to staying strong and stopped friends! Have a safe, sober Memorial Day Weekend, and try to remember the real significance of the holiday while we're at it.

There IS something about this weekend, look at all those threads about slip-ups or cravings (one of which is mine).

I doubt it's about Memorial Day, I didn't even know about it until I read the post above. I think it's the start of summer...

Having the same kind of summer feeling. I have an opportunity to get wasted tonight with no work tomorrow, but no dice. Staying home, drinking water and watching my Dodgers do their thing on TV.

Stay safe, there is definitely something in the air this weekend that's not so good for us. Buckle down. We can do this!
