second day, long road ahead
Hi, thought i'd introduce myself.I'm 40 yrs old been drinking heavily for over 20 years.Made the decision yesterday to stop.Been trying for a long time, don't know what else to do.
Welcome cammy! I hope you'll find this to be a helpful place. The people here gave me so much encouragement and strength that I was able to quit after drinking 30+ yrs. Yes, it's a long road ahead - but think of the alternative - continuing on the way you were. You're doing the right thing. A whole new world is waiting for you.
Welcome cammy!
I didn't do very well quitting on my own either, until I finally faced the fact that I was fighting a losing battle and reached out here for help. It was scary to think about getting sober, but I took it one day (or one hour) at a time. Once I started seeing positive changes, I knew I didn't want to go back to that vicious cycle.

Hey...good for you that you could stop for just one day...today....every journey begins with the first step, and that one is often the hardest....good luck to you and use SR often. These forums are a great resource for those in recovery.

Cammy, welcome. I'm just a newcomer here myself, but my stint went about seventeen years before I got out from under it. What you're doing is commendable.
I would advise you have a discussion with a physician about the extent of your drinking and your intention to quit. At that amount of time, you are almost certainly going to experience some physical withdrawal, which can dangerous.
Some general practical tips to guide you through the next few days here. Make sure you get plenty of fluids. Try to stick to a daily routine; get regular meals and try to sleep regular hours. Get exercise. Before you know it, you'll notice a huge difference.
Good luck.

Right on and Welcome.
I started this journey after 20 years of hard drinking myself. I am also 40. I began it last year in June at 39 I had a couple slips but if I added up all sober time in the last 11 months. Its is about 6 months. I just keep going for it. Because before last June I probably was sober maybe 60 days in 20 years only because of jail time for dui''s.
