I would drink cough syrup, listerine, vanilla extract...anything with alcohol after the vodka ran out. I'm so happy I don't do that anymore. It felt very shameful.

Yea I'm pretty ashamed to say I would find anything with alcohol in it if I ran out. Lowest point I drank cooking wine. Immediately threw that up.

Beer and whiskey were my drink of choice. And they do the job just fine. I might wake up hung over. I might not make it to work the next day. All the usual bad stuff.
Vodka was a different story. When I drank vodka.... woke up on an airplane and was immediately arrested for assault and spent the night in jail. That was a whole new level of BAD for me.
What's my point? They are all bad. None of this garbage is safe. If you're alcoholic, you can't touch any of it. We're never going to be the kind of person that can drink "moderately". And you know what, I don't care about that any more.
I'm only sober for 2 days now and I know for a fact that this is not going to be easy. But that's all I care about now.

Vodka for me was just.....blah. I had to drink a lot to get a buzz and that was menial at best. My DOC was Chardonnay, it was the only alcohol that gave me euphoria. One glass and I already had the zoolander look. I think I was alergic, blackouts were common after 3 glasses.

Hard liquor I usually stayed away from - it'd get me too drunk too fast, and bad things (well, worse than usual) would always happen.

For me it was beer for many, many years. About 6 years ago I discovered cider, and Strongbow became one of my favourite drinks. If I drank 4 of those tall boy cans pretty fast, I'd have a pretty good buzz going on. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that it also had a lot to do with stripping the enamel right off my teeth.

Of course like any good alcoholic, I'd drink whatever was there, really. I just played at having discerning tastes.

When money was tight, I used to fill a water bottle with vodka and take it to the pub with me and just order Diet 7Up and top that up with my vodka.

Nearly 5 months sober now and I am shocked to think I did that. It was desperate that I would buy my vodka before going to the pub and make sure I had it with me.

That behaviour seems alien to me noe, but I know I have to be careful and not get complacent.

My DOC was always wine though, but it is not easy to bring that in to a pub. My hangovers were much worse on wine and it wasn't so easy to hide from my old roommate.

Vodka was easy to hide, so I found I was drinking more of that in a glass with 7Up thinking no-one knew.

Personally I think it's way better to look forward than back.
