not looking forward to going home

not at ALL looking forward to going home. I'm starting again at day 1 sober today, so I am not looking forward to going home. My apt - empty beer & whiskey bottles, full ash trays - just a complete wreck. I don't want to look at that kitchen or that couch in my living room where I sat for the past 4 days straight drinking.

Can you have someone else clean it up for you, like a friend or relative....good luck, one day is better than no days...

offthewagon 05-16-2012 11:40 AM

nope. I'm kind of on my own with this. no friends, no family that can help. :(

Maybe it's better that you clean it up to keep busy and start anew with a clean apartment and the satisfaction that you can do it yourself.
Put on some music and go to it.I actually find it is a kind of therapy for me sometimes.

Sometimes you have to do things on your own, it sounds really hard when you're newly sober.... I remember having to clean out my house... Booze hidden everywhere imaginable. Empties that were weeks old. It was hard but I had to do it on my own, I was so embarrassed it made me feel like drinking just to get rid of that feeling. Your best bet is to walk in, open up all the windows and get to cleaning, don't stop to think about it, dont play any music that you used to drink to, don't do anything that you used to. Just clean it all up and throw it all out. Don't give yourself a chance to relapse. Goodluck, you can do this!

It will be good for you. I even broke down and cried cleaning up my mess. You can get through this. Action keeps me sober.

Peace,

Think of it as an act of commitment. You're getting that crap out of your life, and when you're done you can relax in your nice, clean, sober apartment.

Don't forget to bring some huge plastic garbage bags

Use this as part of the process of healing.

You can clear away and remove all the memories of those dark days and start anew with a clean apartment and hopefully some nutritious food.

And, I second the idea of good music while you're doing it. :)

I found coke on my credit cards this afternoon. Cleaned out my bottles. I never drink at home but this last relapse I did. Had to clean up my office where I drink.

I took solice in my efforts. A way to say good bye.

Day two here.... Hang in there!!!

Clean up and sign on to SR for chat. I have time alone tonight and that spells trouble but I plan on chatting to stay connected. A meeting is not possible but that is.

Be well.... Stay sober!

I always found the clean up cathartic as well - you'll be ok offthewagon :)

I am definitely not the "self-discipline" type, but years ago I made myself a couple of habits that only take minutes to do and made me feel better:

"never wake up to a dirty apartment and never come home to an unmade bed"

(dirty = bottles/stinky ashtrays/dishes in sink - rest doesn't count)

When you look at it (with disgust) just remember it's the last time you'll ever put yourself in that position. The one who made that mess was miserable - you're about to have a new life & leave that person behind. Once you grit your teeth and face the mess, I agree with the others, you'll feel relieved and unburdened.

Look at the cleaning up as the beginning of you taking control of your life. You can do it.
