Ok, mates, this is historic! I am at 24 and if I keep it up I will not have to raise my hand at next Saturday's meeting when they ask who's in their first 30 days. Woo hoo! I always thought counting days was some kind of weird ritual, but I see now that it helps me STAY sober. Today, for example, I went to Whole Foods and anyone who shops there knows that they have displays of wine throughout the store. You can't avoid the liquor section when it's spread out, you know? Absolute torture for someone early in recovery. I actually shed a tear right there in the store looking at one of my favorite red wines beckoning me so sweetly. I had to keep saying to myself "sweet poison, sweet poison." Anyway...the point is that because I've gotten through 24 days and am being cheered on by my sponsor and all of you, i felt fortified. I was resentful and sad that I couldn't take that sweet wine home with me as I saw another woman do (damn you!), but at least for today, I was able to look back at the last 24 days and keep my hands in my pockets! A daily reprieve as they say.
