Jillian, before I read the whole thread I was going to suggest EMDR. It really helped my PTSD. Your fears are completely reasonable, it can be very very hard to relive those traumatic moments but it gets easier and the right therapist will know how much to push and will help bring you back down before you leave. We spent a few sessions creating my happy, safe place (for me, riding my horse in an empty field) and I would live that moment the same way I would have to relive the traumas during the session until my anxiety was reduced enough for me to feel comfortable. It was very difficult the first few sessions, but the point was to remove the emotional connect to the memories and I can say it was very effective for me.
