Well I'm Here

Yesterday was a week for me. I quit drinking. I wanted to wait a week to make sure I could/would stick with it this time. I went cold turkey, which from doing research and family experiences was not my wisest decision. The first couple of days were very bad, but I am feeling better in regards to the withdrawal symptoms now....

The problem I also have when I quit is after about a week my body freaks out with gout. The pain from the gout usually drives me back to the beer because I know it will go away. Strange I know, but that is the case. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

No, but gout is treatable. And not with beer. See a doctor.

And congratulations on a week.

Welcome to SR RiverRunner and well done on the week

I'm not sure about the gout thing but a trip to the doctors would certainly be a good idea x

Hi RiverRunner - welcome

I suffered with gout a lot for years - since I got sober the attacks have been rare, fleeting and not very painful.

I'm taking that as a sign I'm on the right track

Do go see your Dr, RR

I do plan to see the Doctor. Our plan was to wait a few weeks to let my blood levels get closer to normal and take a blood test to see where my "normal" uric acid levels are at and go from there. In some ways I feel the pain from the gout is the punishment my body is giving back to me for abusing it for the last ten years. The last couple of weeks I was drinking beer around the clock.

Beer CAUSES gout!!! Maybe you just got dehydrated after you quit drinking.

Call your doctor and see if you can take aleeve... If he says yes, only if he says yes, aleeve will probably work well on your gout.

Thank you everyone. I did get a perscription for a super-charged anti-inflamatory from my Doctor.

I do know that beer, and other yeast based drinks cause gout for those prone to it. The cycle I get into is that when I drink a lot the gout will go away come back when I am not drinking so much. It had become a vicious circle. Like right now if I bought a 12 pack on my home from work the gout would be gone tomorrow and for a couple of days.

River - Congratulations on your week sober! That's fantastic. I hope you get the gout thing managed. (My father suffered from it terribly & he hardly drank. He had a special diet he had to follow.)

Welcome to SR!

Glad you are here!

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory remedies work best, but only for a short period of time; ibuprofen is one of the best and it's over the counter! The real goal is to lower uric acid levels to reduce gout inflammation.

Be careful with sodas as they deplete our potassium levels and can then become lethal.

Medical advice is best from a medical professional.
