I'm in AA. As I work my 4th step I am seeing patterns of possible sex addiction. Is this something I can deal with via AA or would I need to likely go to SAA?

I'm no expert on AA, and don't get me wrong, sex is great, but i think you'd unbalance an AA meeting talking about sex, although it's been over ten years since i've been to a meeting, maybe they've changed.

Why not get through the rest of the steps and find out for yourself?

I don't have that experience to share, but anything is possible!

I only know it worked for my alcohol addiction....I'd take care of that first. Especially working your fourth step. Who knows?....I agree with SB...After seeing the results I got...Anything is possible. It could be as simple as just removing the alcohol.

Sex problems are VERY common for alcoholics. It is normal alcoholic stuff, when we have killed off all emotion, all that is left is instinct. This aint stuff for a meeting. I took my fourth with the help of my sponsor with every line. I lacked the capacity to understand what I was really looking at. Just work through it with an understanding sponsor and you will see you are just like the rest of us. Boy, I was so lonely, even in AA, until I found that out.

As I understand it, gaining 'emotional sobriety' is how one deals with cross-addictions. I know people who put things like cigarettes, caffeine, over-eating and 'bottom-line' sex behaviours 'on the programme' (meaning abstaining one day at a time) while they worked their primary programme in AA. They didn't go to separate 12 step meetings.

I'm doing it now with cigarettes. One day at a time.

I know there are many 12 Step Programs other than AA. My only addiction was alcohol, so AA was my program of recovery. I've often thought EVERYONE would benefit by living according to the 12 Steps, whether addicted or not...it's just a great way of living.
