Books and movies about addiction/alcoholism/recovery

I am sure I've seen a thread on this subject - books and movies about addiction and recovery - but I can't find it.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I just downloaded to my Kindle 'Sober Truths' by Jill Kelly and 'The Disease of More' by Eleanor R.

Sometimes it's tough to try and find old threads.
I recommend...

"Drinking: A Love Story" by Caroline Knapp
"Diary of an Alcoholic Housewife" by Brenda Wilhelmson
"Under The Influence" by James Robert Milam and Katherine Ketcham
"Sober for Good" by Anne M. Fletcher
and of course...
"Rational Recovery: The New Cure for Substance Addiction" by Jack Trimpey

Some books that I have that I have yet to read...
"One Breath at a Time: Buddhism and the Twelve Steps" by Kevin Griffin {even though I'm not into AA I thought I would give this a shot}
"Addiction and Grace: Love and Spirituality in the Healing of Addiction" by Gerald G. May

Some books that are on my wishlist...
"Loaded: Women and Addiction" by Jill Talbot
"Understanding the Alcoholic's Mind" by Arnold M. Ludwig

Don't know of any movies really...

Hope this helped somewhat and gave you some ideas. :)

Ps. I got all my books off of Amazon.

Cool thread! I tend to like memoirs more. Here's my list of books:

1. Drinking, A Love Story
2. Diary of an Alcoholic Housewife
3. Moments of Clarity
4. How to Quit Drinking Without AA (Not really anti-AA, but has tons of practical advice)
5. Sober for Good

Have not read but very much want to (and will!):

1. Okay, I Quit, Now What?
2. Living Sober Sucks (but living drunk sucks more)
3. Best Kept Secret
4. Still Standing: Addicts Talk About Living Sober
5. Passages Through Recovery: An Action Plan for Preventing Relapse
6. Mommy Doesn't Drink Here Anymore: Getting Through the First Year of Sobriety
7. Second Chances: Top Executives Share Their Stories of Addiction & Recovery
8. Drinking Diaries: Women Serve Their Stories Straight Up
9. Chicken Soup for the Recovering Soul: Your Personal, Portable Support Group with Stories of Healing, Hope, Love and Resilience (Chicken Soup for the Soul)
10. Tales of Addiction and Inspiration for Recovery: Twenty True Stories from the Soul

And lastly, I have so many I'd like to read I'm putting them down in my own go-to list. Thanks!!!

Bayliss, I was posting while you had already posted. Funny how we've read some of the same books. I'm interested in your 2nd to last one.

Oh yeah, I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas and I'm pretty sure all of the books I listed are available.

A Women's Way thru the Twelve Steps by Dr. Stephanie S. Covington. Not a novel...but has the AA twelve steps broken down in each chapter with Women's personal stories and how they applied the steps in their lives....good book.

One book that blew my mind, but at the same time could relate was Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx. Still have it by my bed.

Lol. I thought for sure that someone would have posted before I did while I was writing. And yes! We did read a lot of the same books...you gave me even more to add to my wishlist! :)
I will definitely check out that Loaded one...not sure when I will get it.
I have a Kindle on my iPhone...which reminds me...another book I have which is on my Kindle called "Alcohol: How to Give it Up and Be Glad You Did" by Phillip Tate and Albert Ellis.

The Kindle was a great gift from my husband. Little did I know how much I'd be using it! I quit drinking about 2 weeks later.

Living Sober Sucks

Prior to coming into recovery 4 years ago, I was obsessed with memoirs of drinking/recovery.

I was very moved by the A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard books by James Frey even though they are a fictionalised form of biography.

Also the movie Sherrybaby with Maggie Gyllenhaal.

I LOVED the James Frey books, highly recomend them. But my all time fav...Permanent Midnight, Jerry Stahl. Also made into a movie.

Scroll down from the Newcomer's Forum and you will find one on books. Not sure about a Movie section. :)
