new to detox
I have 5 years of end stage arthritis of the ankles. Four years ago I started on a various use of pain meds. I am now on Norco and have been for 3 years. I had my left ankle fused last Nov. and seduled to have the other one done in May. I have tried to go cold turkey on a number of occasion, but to no avail. I couldn't go more than two day. I was climbing the wall. I am now taking 6 to 8 a day. When the operation is complete, I will be taken off my meds. I am realy afraid I'm going to have a hard time to get off this stuff. Any suggestion on how to get off this stuff easier than cold turkey? My doc said he would try to work with me on the withdrawal, but not for ever. Any help will be of great help. gunguy.
Hi Gunguy
Welcome to SR
I know nothing about Norcos but if your Dr's prepared to work with you to help you get you off the pills I think that's a good thing - I know you're scared but it sounds like a different proposition to cold turkey to me.
You'll find a lot of support and understanding here - I recommend you also look at our substance abuse forum too

I definitely agree with Dee...I would ask more of your Doctor if you have concerns...of course they won't help you taper off of it forever...because the taper and withdrawal won't last forever but I would probably ask more questions of your Doc, for sure.
He will have a plan on how to cut down and for how long...it'll probably like any other medication that you have to "wean" yourself off of.
I am not sure what Norco's are either though and there may be a different way..
But I would definitely ask for more insight from my Doc and check the other forum too.
Best of luck gunguy and welcome to SR.

You can't go cold turkey after such a long period on such strong pain meds. It's very dangerous. Getting off them is a very gradual taper. Get your drs advice and I'd also suggest talking to a drug and alcohol medical specialist. I have a friend who went through the process after 2 years on oxy due to several back surgeries. It took several months to taper her off on very small increments. Norco is even stronger than oxy so get professional advice and don't try doing it on your own.
