Disease progression during abstinence
I personally believe that it progresses in every way... mentally, spiritually, emotionally & physically. Not that is actually gets worse while not drinking but that it will be worse once you start again. Its also a very healthy fear too ;-)
I learned about the physical aspects of kindling the hard way.... Have a read, its very interesting & informative.
EDIT: Just saw this was already posted by TU so I will just +1 ;-)

I can unfortunately attest to the "pushups" theory.
I went back drinking after 2 years and it was a nightmare.
I ended up going from 2 bottles of wine to a bottle 750/1000cc of hard liquor a day.
I also found it MUCH harder to quit the second time and possibly with a lot more support (the second time around).
It took me a year and a half to quit the second time around, as opposed to 6 months the first time.
Take it from those who have gone before you, it gets worse.
Should you decide to "go for it", bookmark this site. You will need it.

Is this THIQ thing real? I did a search but couldn't find any reliable sources for this, not even a newspaper article. If it's real then surely this is a big deal as it completely confirms the disease model of addiction.

I never really questioned the source but I guess thats a good thing to do, I just did a search on Google for 'Tetrahydrolsoqulnoline' and it showed a few results, google replaces the search with another word so click the search instead link.
This was one of the interesting ones I found in the search just now - https://cosozo.com/article/my-name-s...E2%80%99m-thiq
*Edit, I think thats about the same article, oh well, lol sorry

I don't know about the disease progression during abstinence, but I do know that the older you get, the harder it is to recover from a drunk.
When I was a young pup in college, my recovery time after a night of drinking was measured in hours.
Now if I were to get drunk my recovery time would be measured in days (assuming that I actually recover).

Everyone I've known that has gone back out, and there are several, came back saying it ended up being worse that when they ended it the last time. Some, it took a while, they "throttled up" over a few weeks or months, others, "katy bar the door".

I lost my father last week to alcoholism. He hadn't touched a drink in over 8 years. He was dead within a month of picking up the first drink. I too had doubts about the progressive nature of alcoholism. My doubts have been laid to rest.
Over the past few years my boyfriend had several months of sobriety, then returned to drinking, and each time he returned it was much worse, and that was after a break of only a few months. It shocked him how quickly and powerfully this happened.
It's truly scary. His alcoholism progressed. To respond to a question from the first post of this (resurrected) thread. AA had no influence on him, as he never read the book or went to any meetings. He himself noticed that after he quit and returned, each time he quickly went to a much worse level of drinking.
