My First Designated Driver Duty I will perform my first designated driver duty tomorrow. A co-worker and I have have been invited to a friends and family event at a new sports bar type joint after work tomorrow. I'm 3 weeks sober and counting, and I'm actually excited for this challenge. |
Good luck to you! This task wouldn't bother me much as I never really drank outside of home (I liked to hide it). Not sure what your drinking habits were but just remember you have a role and other people are counting on you to stay sober (you have lives in your hands). You may just see how annoying drunk people really are too ;) Congrats on your 3 weeks!!!! |
3 weeks sober is a good start to your recovery journey of a lifetime. There are so many wonderful gifts just waiting for you to enjoy and treasure, just like they have for me for the past 21 yrs. In early recovery I listened and learned ways to protect my sobriety so that I wouldnt be tempted to drink. Those ways meant changing old ways i used to do things to more healthier ways. If i wanted to be a designated driver im sure i would chose to take patiants in rehab to outside meetings instead of driving for a friend who will be drinking in a bar. Allowing myself to sit in a situation where alcohol will be all around me and something I so loved till it stopped working for me, would be setting myself up for a disasterous outcome. For 21 yrs, i have protected my recovery, my sobriety, by doing whatever I needed to do because it is that important to me. No one will take care of my recovery but me. No one will care about my recovery but me. My recovery, sobriety belong to me and no one will cause me to fail but me. However, I chose to enjoy and reap the rewards of the promises provided to us as stated in our Big Book of AA. As a friend to a person going to a bar, I would have to decline my services because If i were new in recovery, going to a bar would be a no no. Hi, Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic as I extend my ESH, experiences, strengths and hopes to you of what it was like before, during and after alcohol. It is what has kept me sober for the last 21 yrs. |

I'm glad you are excited but be sure to have a "plan B" to get away if things go south. Remember, if you hang around the barber shop you WILL end up getting a hair cut. All the best. Bob R |
I'm on my first DD duty on Saturday, don't plan on staying at any bars, just dropping off and picking up a couple of friends. |
Does this sound weird? I really don't have problems with temptation at a place like a bar or a party. Drunk people are a turn off to drinking (HA! The irony!). I'm much more worried about being alone and bored or angry. You can do it, FDM. Congratulations on your three weeks. |
What a opportunity. I hope you represent and have more fun alcohol free than everyone there. I do not have bar problems not really tempted especially when the bad behavior of drinkers start to show up. Usually around 9:30ish. I enjoy live music so I find myself in bars alot. Now that the NCAA tourney is starting I may find myself in the sports bar as well as I do not have a TV. If there were any doubts about my ability or "spiritual condition" I would not go and have bailed on plans before because of that. If you are "Thirsty" or feel shaky cancel the plans and don't look back. |
Oh my, they are going to drive you crazy!! Like driving a car full of little kids!! Good luck!!! I'm envious, I'd like that opportunity. Funny they won't realize that it's a learning experience for you. |
