One point-don't confuse getting sober with going on some kind of diet. You're removing your best and handiest coping mechanism, and escape valve, and ready answer to controlling your feelings and how the world appears to you.
Reality all the time, unmasked is often overwhelming after a time to an alcoholic and sends us back the bottle confused as to what happened, since we had decided so firmly to stop earlier.
Believing you'll be special regarding that too common experience is an error and may put you in the spot of feeling bad about yourself for failing, since you won't understand it has little to do with your wants or decisions at all.
You can do this right and once by availing yourself of some type of effective help.

You are on the right path! Exercise, eat correctly (increase fruit and veggies, reduce sugar and bad carbs, eat multi-grain bread in small amounts). Stick with your friend. Would you ever consider an AA meeting? It helps us in many ways, especially with the social anxiety.
I wish you well on your life changing endeavor!
