decided today to give up drinking

Hi everyone,

I quit smoking cigarettes August 16, 2011 cold turkey. I joined a smoking cessation forum and have been smoke-free, nicotine free for five and a half months so far. The support I receive there is outstanding and I owe much of my nicotine quitting success to the people there.

I have also been contemplating quitting drinking alcohol for quite some time. My drink of choice is red wine. I have been rationalizing that red wine is good for you and has some health benefits when consumed in moderation. However, my problem is that I cannot seem to drink in moderation. I will usually drink the entire bottle and often times, open a second. I end up having feelings of intense guilt and depression the next day.

I only made up my mind yesterday to give up alcohol so I'm not sure how difficult this challenge is going to be. Anyways, I'm glad to be here and look forward to reading and learning about alcohol abuse and hopefully adopt a completely sober lifestyle.

Welcome!! I've heard you can get the same health benefits from grape juice.. not sure though. Sounds like your negatives are outweighing your positives in terms of drinking alcohol. Mine did too.. haven't regretted a single sober day

Hi Masanori! Your story sounds a lot like mine-not being able to stop after i start, next day guilt and anxiety, and rationalization. I decided today to stop the abuse i have been explaining away and embrace recovery. I am surrendering and it feels liberating. I know I need AA support. I can no longer exclude myself from the alcoholic label just because it is abuse and not dependence. I have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, i am better without it, and i hate how i feel EVERY time I drink. Good luck to you!!! xo

I am new too. I have said to myself that I would not drink anymore many times but have no one to hold me to it so I slip back. I can't admit to my husband that I have a problem, it's too embarrassing.

Hi Masonori,

I am de-lurking after a whole month may be of reading the SR forums to respond to your post, because I have the exact same story. Around last Aug-Sep, I was drinking a bottle of wine a day and smoking 3 packs a week. I gave up smoking last Nov. and have cut down considerably on drinking, but I drink all day for 2 days on almost every single weekend. And I tell myself the same thing, if its wine, its not too bad!

Congratulations on quitting smoking!
