a new set of questions...
I am only on Day 5 of abstinence (I say abstinence instead of sober, because I wasn't drunk 24/7). I am day 4 on this site, but I have noticed a common theme of people questioning whether they are really alcoholics or not. Or at the least, if they really have a "drinking problem".
I certainly don't meet any of the classic definitions, however, I know that my relationship with alcohol is not a healthy one. I have tried too many times to just have one, I have sat in church too many times asking God to help me, I have covered up my drinking on multiple occasions, I have had a glass or two of wine upon wakening. For me, this is enough to give abstinence a shot.
So, I was thinking perhaps we could come up some new questions that would help someone....such as a closet drinker...if they *really* have a problem.
I will post the first question in the next post. I am hoping others will add their own.

The difference between a problem drinker and an Alcoholic is that:
A) When the alcohol is taken away from the problem drinker, the problem goes away.
B) When the alcohol is taken away from the Alcoholic, the problem begins.

1. How much money have you spent in the past year on alcohol? What percentage of your income is this? If I had to estimate (which I never even though about coming up with a yearly figure till now), I would say close to $3,000. Oh my goodness!!! That is CRAZY!!!
2. Would you be embarrassed if friends, family or co-workers knew how much/how often you drink? ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!
3. Have you ever questioned your drinking? EVERYDAY!!!
4. Do you lose control of your drinking after the first drink? YES, almost every single time
I'll add one too.....
5. While having a drink, are you already thinking about the next drink before the current one is finished? I ALWAYS am thinking about the next drink. I usually already have the next beer within reach before I am halfway done with the current one.

Even though you suspect that you need to quit, does the very idea of never drinking again scare the **** out of you? If so, you might just be addicted.
Ever wake up on the kitchen floor and wonder how you got there?
Ever been afraid to look at the call history on your cell phone after an all-nighter?
Tag more then one liquor store so they won’t think you drink as often as you do?

Do you tongue out the last 3 drops that you know will stay in the bottle otherwise?
Do you have your own special technique for opening wine bottles when no corkscrew is available?
Did you ever wonder if you could light your breath with a match?
Did you even for a moment consider tasting a beer based shampoo?
Does your pet act different when you're drinking?
Do you have neighbor problems?
Do you sometimes watch yourself cry in the mirror?
Do you have two or more scars that were certainly not due to drinking from events that took place when you were drinking?
Is watching an episode of 'Intervention' just entertainment or a deeply emotional experience?

To dgillz.... it is really semantics. I was not at the point where I drank all day long. I drank everynight, would get.up, go to work, get home, repeat.
When I say abstinence, I mean not drinking a drop. Cutting down didn't work for me.
I just prefer abstinence to sober...don't know why...just seems to fit better for me. But I am NOT kidding myself into thinking that drinking less is an option.
Thank you for asking for clarification.
