Dreams

Closing in on 1 year, my dreams often tend to start with a situation of me preparing to drink when a blackout would occur and it brings me to the inevitable bad situation. Be it, locked up, in a accident or sleeping on the couch in a empty house. Anyone have any info on this? I was told this happens in recovery?

Hi and welcome

yeah - drinking dreams are pretty common in early recovery Brella - and they can make a return around milestones like a year for some reason.

I have no scientific basis for why they happen, I'm afraid - maybe someone else will - but I just treat them as I do other dreams - for me they're on the same weird level as me still having those high school exam dreams even tho that was 30 years ago

Thanks Dee, yes they've come back more prominently as I get closer. Guess it's a way of showing me what drinking can lead to, in my case.

I'm coming up on a year as well, periodically i have drinking dreams and they take me right back to where i left off. I have often woken up drenched in sweat unsure if it was a dream or reality. To me that's the cunning and baffling part of this disease, its just ever so patiently waiting. I've shared my dreams at meetings and was quite surprised as to how common this was for those in recovery. Now when i have these dreams i use them a reminder of the way it was. There was nothing glamorous or enjoyable about where alcohol had taken me and as long as i remember that hopefully i wont return.

congratulations on your journey thus far.

Congrats to both of you for your up in coming year anniversaries! I'm not surprised by the dreams. As Today said its good to look at them as a reminder as to where drinking will take you. I could use a big messy drinking dream right now!!!!

I go to my AA meetings regularly and the newcomers remind me that nothing has changed out there. I too need constant reminding as my disease wants me back out on my own so it can kick the crap out of me again. It never gives up.

All the best to everyone in their recovery.
