Thumbs up TOPIC: Food For Thought - Quality vs Quantity

For those who don't know me, Id like
to introduce myself to you. Hi, Im Sharon
and I'm an Alcholic. Thru family intervention
21 yrs ago, I entered the doors of recovery
for my alcoholism. With the tools and knowledge
I learned about my alcholism, Ive remain
sober for those 21 yrs, incorperating the
steps and principles set down for us by the
founders of AA many yrs. ago.

One of the things Ive learned about over the
years is how to make my own sobriety count
for something. Have I used my recovery to
better my life and to be a better person.

And a good question to ask myself, is the
quality of my recovery better than the quantity
of it.

For me, i believe the quality has become better
over the yrs each time i reach out to another
person struggling with their addiction by sharing
my own ESH with them about what it was like
before, during and after my drinking. In doing
so, i become less involved in my own selfish
behavior and focus on others needs more so
than my own.

To humbly and honestly give of myself to only
ask in return that I be granted another day sober
by my HP.

For you, which is more important in your own
recovery and sobriety, Quality or Quanity.

Quality of living a good recovery or is it the number
of days, months or years more important to you?

Hmmm ... actually, I think both are important to me. Quality of life is huge. I'm so much more "present" here with my family now that I'm sober. I have energy, I'm available, I'm clear-headed, and I'm more motivated to do stuff with them and spend time with them. I don't sit at home all day wrapped around a whiskey bottle ... I'm actually participating in and enjoying my life for a change. That is absolutely precious to me.

The number of days of sobriety is important to me too. Every day I say "no" to alcohol and "yes" to a sober and happy life is an accomplishment. With every day I mark off the calendar as a sober day, I feel renewed, restored, and re-energized to keep going. This is my third time getting sober in the past year, and it's been the longest. One day at a time, for sure, but every day sober is a victory.

I'll take another 24.

In recovery not only is the quality or quanity
of our sobriety is important but also other
things in life as well.

Too much of anything is often said is not
good. Even too much program can cause
a problem. So balance in there makes a
big difference.

Talking about quality or quantity in everyday
life such as quality of your education, relationships,
health, etc. Someone can go to school and rush
thru it goofing off or partying too hard and the
quality of their education is questionable. Then
on the flip side, know one can learn too much,
right?

How about relationships, marriages.....how is the
quality of both of these for you? We get involved
at first with good intentions and due to our addictions
things dont turn out the way we'd hope they'd be.

We go from one relationship to another then another
which gives us quantity, but how is the quality
of them? Not so good in many circumstances. Right?
Do you work hard on trust, patiants, curtesy, kindness,
care...all the important things in a marriage or
relationships.

Moving to heath. Have you added up on days
you feel heathy, strong, mentally, physically,
emotionally, spiritually. Each day we eat right,
sleep well, work, play all the proper way then
the quality of ur health will shine.

Everything in life has a price. Good or bad.
Quality or quantity.

Neither one. I don't count days, since that would only be counting how long my addiction has been deprived of it's precious stuff. Although my addiction certainly sees abstinence as a deprivation, I no longer see it as a deprivation for me. In the final analysis, I didn't quit in order to live my recovery. I quit so that I could live my life, and in contrast to when I was actively drinking, I now am.

I think sobriety, like any discipline that is practiced, gets "bigger and better".

Sort of like learning to play the piano, or train for a marathon.
