Books?

Since I was an active reader before wine filled my evenings I was wondering if anyone could suggest a few decent books on the subject of alcoholism, escaping it, memoirs, etc.... I know "Lit"is supposed to be good. And if this thread has already been done, please direct me to where it might be. Thanks!!

Hi- Yeah, there are several threads out there if you're able to search for them. My favorites:

Drinking, A Love story: Caroline Knapp
Saturated: Jennifer Place (this one is pretty new and my favorite)
Out of the Rough: Laura Baugh
Unwasted: Sasha Scoblic
Lit: Mary Karr
Sober Truths: Jill Kelly
Everything I Never Wanted To Be: Dina Kucera
The Addictive Personality: Craig Nakken
Best Kept Secret: Amy Hatvany
Parched: Heather King
Tales of Addiction and Inspiration:Barbara Sinor

That should keep you busy for awhile!

I loved 'Drinking: A Love Story' by Caroline Knapp. I think she was so brave to write a book that was raw and deeply honest. When I read that book, I felt, for the first time, that maybe I could really do this.

I recently read 'Untied' by Meredith Baxter which was really good.

'A New Earth' by Eckhart Tolle is not about alcoholism, but about how to live life fully by shedding resentments and staying in the present.

Thanks Anna. I have not yet heard about Untied. I'll have to look that one up!

Thanks Inca and Anna. I have a 5 month old so my searching seems to always get interrupted. Hopefully I can read when he naps!

I loved the Caroline Knapp book as well.

I also enjoyed the book "Dry: A Memoir" by Augusten Burroughs (a bit racy but also very funny).

And a heart breaking story very lovingly wrote from a grieving father, "Terry : My Daughter's Life-and-Death Struggle with Alcoholism" by George McGovern

Drinking - a Love Story sounds like something I need to read. In addition to the AA Big Book, I'm also reading "Under the Influence: A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism" by Milam and Ketchum. All good books listed here - need to add a few to my library. :)

"Lit" is awesomely amazing just reread it. I love Mary Karr she is my inspiration. Also Smashed by Koren Zailckas.

Great thread! I'm reading Diary of an Alcoholic Housewife. I can hardly put it down - although I don't have tons of time to read because I've packed my days with all kinds of activities. This book speaks to me on all kinds of levels.

Another vote for Drinking, A Love Story. Love that book.

Also, I'm reading, Okay, I Quit, Now What? Very practical and sound advice.

How to Quit Drinking Without AA - I love this book for it's checklists and charts. One checklist I made when I was drinking and I often look at it now.

Mommy Doesn't Drink Here Anymore is another good one.

Lastly, Don't Let the Bastards Grind You Down is a quick read that highlights stuff people might go through when quitting. Happy reading!

Another great book is Sober for Good, by Anne Flecher. The reason I like it is that it tells the stories of people who have had successful recoveries--and it's amazing the variety of different approaches people take!

I am currently reading "you can heal your life" by Louise Hay. Not just about alcoholism but about changing our patterns of negative thinking. It has been VERY helpful, check it out.

Another vote for Sober for Good, I had forgotten about that one.

To other HFAs like me, check out Understanding the High Functioning Alcoholic by Sarah Allen Benton, MS, LMHC. (High Functioning Alcoholic - Home)
