hi, I'm new here!
hi, I'm new here!
hi, I'm newleaves2012 and I am on day one of quitting alcohol. I'm hoping to use this forum to give and receive support and to also educate myself.
I'm 40 years old and have always been a social drinker. now over the past 4-5 years it's turned into drinking alone at the house, maybe 10-15 beers every day. I really do want off of this endless loop but sobriety scares me. alcohol has basically taken over all of my non work life and I don't even know who I am without it.
so that's some of my story. thanks and happy new year to everyone.

Welcome,
It's normal to feel scared at the thought of giving up alcohol. I couldn't imagine how I could get through an evening without a drink. But, before long, I found lots of things to fill my time. And, SR is a great place for support.

thanks everyone. today has been weird. i have repeatedly glanced around for my beer can today and then remember that there is no beer can, and that makes me anxious. going to bed sober tonight also makes me anxious. to fall asleep naturally..
Hang in there newleaves!
Don't let the fear of anxiety or insomnia trick you back into drinking. I fell for that a many times. Every day it gets a little easier.
SR has been very helpful for me!
Good luck!

hang in there newleave.... i am on day 1 too and i WAS an every night drinker for over 7 years. i am determined to kick alcohol a life without it sounds so much better than my life that revolved around alcohol. You are not alone!!
I too am anxious about sleep tonight BUT just think even if we are tired tomorrow it is better than being hungover. and think how proud you will be of yourself. getting that first day out of the way is probably gonna be the herdest but after that you are well on your way!

Newleaves. The idea of sobriety used to fill me with cold dread.
I discovered that once I was relieved of the obsession that I am relaxed and enjoy each day for what it is. Tomorrow is not todays problem.
I am now 7plus months sober and wish I could have done it years ago. Life is so much better free of the torment of the struggle.
Good luck

Welcome NewLeaves, and congrats on your decision to quit drinking! You'll find lots of good support here at SR.
You may already know this, but detoxing from alcohol can increase your anxiety... but it will pass, likely in a few days. The first few days can be hard but it does get easier!
Also, the best advice I was given in my first few days was to drink plenty of water and to take vitamins, particularly B12. I found that really helped with the physical and emotional anxiousness.
It's actually pretty exciting to figure out who you are without alcohol. It's an adventure, really. Good luck to you and keep posting!
