I was prescribed Naltrexone when I was released from detox. It worked very well for me. You would be prescribed this medication by a physician, correct?

Not Naltrexone but Campral. Best to discuss with your doctor and used in conjunction with therapy or support group, as it helps but not a 'fix all'. It's not the approach for everyone, but was okay for me.

I was firm in my mind when I used Campral that I wanted abstinence. Some people continue to drink a bit on Naltrexone, that's a whole other issue ('Sinclair Method') that is a quite controversial treatment, I won't go into it further here.

For me, it does two things:

1. Eliminates the cravings
2. If you drink while taking it, you don't get that buzz us alcoholics crave

Side effects are minimal to none (upset stomach in some)

Personally, I think it's an amazing medication but apparently, it doesn't work for everybody. Another problem is you have to take it every day and it's too easy not to take it and fall back into a relapse.

It's recommended you take Naltrexone in conjunction with some type of support (AA, counseling).

Been taking it (on and off) for over a year now. Haven't taken it for a couple of months because I haven't needed to. Give it a try, you have absolutely nothing to lose.

Check with your Dr, Jaynee.
No personal experience to share, but as I understand naltrexone is not suitable for everyone
