Quotes to Make Us Think

I've been finding a lot of quotes regarding addiction/recovery/relapses and just life in general that I have found very motivational lately. Here are a few that really hit home for me that I wanted to share. If you have any favorite quotes of your own, please share too!

"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to success is more important than any other one thing." Abraham Lincoln

"First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you. " ~Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald

"Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won. It exists, it is real, it is possible, it is yours." Ayn Rand

Here is one I HATE:

"The drunk mind speaks the sober heart."

At first alcohol gave me wings. Then it took away the sky.

"It is the belief that we are weak and incomplete that creates our desire for alcohol, and the illusion that alcohol compensates for that makes us feel dependent on it."

Overthis, the quote you dislike, I totally disagree with it. A drunk mind speaks bs.

"if you share your pain you cut it in half, if you don't you double it."
"Untreated alcoholism without the steps on a daily basis will make my past my future."

This one's so funny to me:
"I've been beating up on myself so much I feel like hitting myself."

The quote in my signature is one of my favorites.

Oddly enough (and I never mentioned this before) but the quote was under a bottled beer cap .

Exactly! It drives me crazy that so many people say that phrase all the time. My sober heart is nothing like my drunken mouth!

“Let us not look back in anger or forward in fear, but around in awareness.” -James Thurber

And anything from Desiderata, a poem that has been a guiding force in my life...
Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. -Max Ehrnman

Thanks, overthis - I love quotes, too!

Giving up doesn't always mean you are weak; sometimes it means that you are strong enough to let go.* ~Author Unknown
It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.* ~e.e. cummings
Most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle that they need to overcome. Since the present moment is life itself, it is an insane way to live. Eckhart Tolle

Always continue the climb. It is possible for you to do whatever you choose, if you first get to know who you are and are willing to work with a power that is greater than ourselves to do it.
~Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Gosh, I have so many quotes I like. I love quotes they are so inspirational. And funny how sometimes when you find one that makes sense to you, its like life just whacked you upside the head and you get it.

But my favorite quote that I live by on a daily basis is "Just Don't Drink"
