My One Year

Hi All,

I just did one year sober yesterday. In celebration of that I reread my first post on the board and have posted the link here:
http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...ml#post2777966

My life is very different now then what it was. I'm sober, I'm dating, I'm working, My online business is kicking $#*, I lost weight and quit smoking.

My perspective on what I was doing and what I thought was ok to do has changed so much. The idea that drinking everyday was something I was doing seems so crazy now.

I remember the battles I would have in the parking lot of the mall. I would fight so hard not to go into the liquor store and lose. I was almost in tears buying alcohol. I'm sure the cashiers must have smelled the stink off me. I could care less about my appearance or what I looked like to them.

The idea of losing my house and all the work I put into it was so wild. I did sell it. Made good money. I think I was in a death spiral. I had given up on life. I was just pounding myself into the ground.

The SR Forums played a major part in me getting out of the booze. I"m not an AA guy. The comments to my posts and private messages meant the world to me.

This post is to say thanks. I don't see many of you online anymore from those early days when being sober seemed like a hell on earth. I hope your ok. If your not ok I'm pulling for you.

It does get better people. I go to the Office Friday nights at the pubs and have Soda or coffee. I date and do the same. I don't care about that stuff anymore.

Why? Because I know that I'm drinking life now. That sweet sweet nectar that is control everyday. Being in my own mind and body.

My own form of sickness was a type of denial. I drank to punish myself and block out the world. I don't do that anymore. Yes, I still get scared and lonely but those are just feelings. I can deal.

Here's to another year.

PS> those first few months were CRAZY HARD.

Congratulations on 1 year! Thank you for your post. For individuals such as myself who are new and are working through a day at time, it means a great deal to read about those who have made it past the first few months and see that they are in a much better place.

Best wishes in year 2!

Jim

Thank you for sharing, I'm so happy to read your success story. It is inspiring. On a side note, AA is helping me but I feel uncomfortable when I see kids at meetings. I agree it's not the place for them and they shouldn't be burdened with their parents' issues in that way. Just my opinion (I don't have kids). I can understand your aversion to AA and am glad that SR has been enough to help keep you sober.

Yes, thank you for coming back and sharing your progress. Reading your first post and seeing how far you've come in a year gives me and, I'm sure, others hope. The notion that things can get better is something that a lot of us are holding on to.
