"Days of Wine and Roses"

I'm fairly new (but not new to these boards), and didn't quite know where to post this...

Has anyone watched the old movie "Days of Wine and Roses" with Jack Lemmon?

As an alcoholic who struggled, it really resonated with me. I think we all have our "greenhouses"...

I thought I'd mention it here, as any newcomer who could use some support/insight might want to check it out.

There's even a scene depicting an AA meeting with absolute accuracy-- it felt bizarre to suddenly be reciting parts of the Big Book along with the speaker in the movie.

Anyhow-- there's my two cents for the day ;-) A movie that shows how difficult our condition is to get ahold of, how much damage it can do, and how the madness grows...

It is and has been a 'long time classic' not only of movie buffs but of those that have found recovery.

There is many a sponsee I have suggested it to. Another one that I found that I so identified with (long after I found recovery) was "Leaving Las Vegas" with Nicolas Cage. This one I also have suggested to many a sponsee. Now that one is an eye opener for those that still have 'stuff' left in their lives.

Alcoholism does progress.

Love and hugs,

I watched it during my first few weeks of sobriety. Terrific movie. Jack Lemmon is fantastic in it.

Yep. And Blake Edwards directed. I'm pretty sure both Edwards and Lemmon quit drinking in real life a few years later. I know Lemmon talked about joining AA and being very happy he did.

I took an English class in college and our professor made us watch "Days of Wine and Roses" and write a paper on it. The movie had a profound impact on me because it forced me to think about my own drinking. As my disease progressed through the years, I would often think back to the movie and how I was similar to Jack Lemon's character. The story of "Days of Wine and Roses" is one of the things that made me decide that I needed to go to AA and get help. I think every alcoholic, or anyone who thinks that they may have a drinking problem should absolutely watch this movie.

P.S. The movie also has a very good theme song!

Fabulous and heartbreaking movie. I saw myself in it. Theme song can still make me cry.

There's another one you might like: "When a man loves a woman".

For a history about AA.....I recommend a Hallmark production of
"My name is Bill"

The leads are James Woods as bill Wilson James Gardner as Dr. Bob Smith and both received awards for their acting.

The scene where Bill is trying to explain alcoholism to his wife Lois broke my heart.
Watch with tissues handy...

For another true story....very dark and disturbing ..."Barfly" with Fay Dunaway and Mickey O'rouak (sp?)
The story is an auto of the screen writer.author ..sorry don't recall his name.
Yes the actor is also an self proclaimed alcoholic....not clear if he was then or not.

This documentary is not only true but features real people and it is frightening.

That's my top 3 suggestion....
