An amazing conversation!
An amazing conversation!
I've been renting my home from my landlady for four years now. She lives a couple of blocks away, and we pass each other when walking our dogs - often stopping for a quick chat. It's always been a pleasant conversation, but nothing revealing or anything. I didn't think we had much in common apart from me being her tenant, and the fact we both own dogs.
She came around to my house yesterday to help fix a problem with the back doors. I don't quite know how we got chatting about it, but we got talking about the fact I've quit drinking (she probably said something about how slim I looked or something!). And I couldn't believe it - she told me she'd been sober for 14 years and attends AA meetings three times a week. We ended up talking for over two hours about drinking, the consequences that we experienced, and the beauty of sobriety. I didn't realize how much I needed a face to face conversation with someone who had experienced similar things to me.
I felt a million times lighter, and I think she got a lot out of it, too. We ended with a big hug and a promise to talk again soon.
It's amazing how you find sober people quite by accident - before I used to draw the problem drinkers, and now I'm slowly finding connections with sober people. Here I was thinking I was the only sober person in my community...and was feeling a bit lonely and isolated on a day to day basis.
Life is picking up beautifully!

Excellent! I'm happy for you - what a great bit of news
Like you I have tended to attract and be drawn to the company of drinkers and am hoping to make new friends in sobriety.
Well done for your progress and I hope you have more uplifting and rewarding surprises ahead

Love it, newwings. It takes such a burden off us when this stuff happens.
I had a conversation with my landlords the other day, too. They wanted to come over & fix something - & wanted to bring sandwiches & beer. I said without even thinking, "I'm an alcoholic - so no beer for me." I said it with a smile. They both said 'good for you'! No shock or disbelief - who knew?
Thanks for the good news, newwings.
