This dang recovery colors everything.
This dang recovery colors everything.
Was doing some early morning reading as part of my recovery method and came upon the following I've read many times over many years but now sober for a bit see it in a brighter light.
"There is no fire like greed,
No crime like hatred,
No sorrow like separation,
No sickness like hunger of heart,
And no joy like the joy of freedom.
Health, contentment and trust
Are your greatest possessions,
And freedom your greatest joy.
Look within. Be still.
Free from fear and attachment,
Know the sweet joy of living in the way."
from the Dhammapada, Words of the Buddha
My sober mind translates words like greed to addiction, hatred to self-destruction, seperation to isolation, hunger to craving and freedom to sobriety and so on. It's like these thoughts spoken long ago were waiting for me as personal messages for this journey. Or maybe I'm just projecting, but I'll take them to heart and use them to help light my path. Whatever tops my tank and keeps the wheels rolling.
