Urge Surfing
Thank you for bumping this thread BPositive, and thank you Dee for creating it.
Urge Surfing has been one of the most powerful tools I have used to end cravings for alcohol.
I read Dee's post several months ago and began applying the techniques immediately.
After a little practice the craving ends almost before I realize that is what it was.
Like the article says, "Urge Surfing" is helpful with other cravings, too.

So this is very similar to CBT then, right? Mindfulness, and accepting a thought, allowing yourself to realize that 'yes, this thought it happening right now, and it feels like this', until it passes, right?
I have been trying, hard, to get better at this. My therapist says this is probably going to be one of the best tools for me. I just have a VERY hard time with the 'quiet of mind' thing, and frankly, just being CALM for even a moment.
I used to be soooo good at meditation. I wish I could regain those skills so badly.

It works well for me love...and I will continue to use these tools while I am away. I'm not looking forward to sitting next to people on the plane who are drinking....we need to ride the wave. ♥
Next trip to France. I will lodge you while your here
You're gettin' busy, wolfie, digging around in the archives. Very good idea, especially for this time of year (I mean, Christmas / NY is only a week away now...eek).

Look like this thread has been bumped a lot in the past so why not again!
Jon Kabat-Zinn likes to talk about the 'awarenessing' mind, even though it's not a real word. If we can be aware of our cravings or thoughts about drinking we see that they are not really us - we are rather the awareness itself, something separate from and bigger than our thoughts, feelings and sensations about drink.
In a real sense, we may be experiencing cravings but we are not the craving - the craving does not hold our identity. We are rather our awarenessing mind that is aware of the craving, and if we can allow it to just be there and don't get caught up in fighting or commenting on it then it it will naturally subside in time just like a wave.
