I used to pick a day/date to quit....my dads birthday, sons birthday, wifes birthday, but did i quit?No....I too was also to quit on the 8th of august,i too fell off the waggon....Like i said the last few days i have been cutting down, cos if i stop straight away i get severe stomach pains.....Tomorow i am quitting this horrible habit....My fave sister gets married in 10 days and i want to be able to sit with her and my family and actually eat a meal....something i can never do whilst i am drinking....

I half-heartedly quit multiple times in my life. You know that you are overdoing it and things just aren't quite right and you need a break.....until the next party. No one can answer this question you ask, accept for you. Your heart and soul will know when it is forever. I hope that you do not wait as long as I did. Best of luck.
Peace, Love and Happiness

It was not easy but when I realized I needed help and then actually got help, things got so much better. My help is the program of AA, a good therapist, taking care of my health. Those people in AA know how to get and stay sober when I hadn't a clue. There are other programs of recovery out there too.

healthy...for me FOREVER sounded like an impossibly long time...especially when i shakey after a couple of days! adopting the JUST FOR TODAY mindset really helped...the day i am in, just for today i will not use, no matter what.

the no matter what part is key. we don't say, i will not use unless >>insert excuse here<< because we can ALWAYS find an excuse!!!! what time is it? did it rain today? am i a good mood? am i in a bad mood? did i drive past 4 pigeons? was the crust on my sandwich too hard?

Wow I like your each and every word!!! Well done!!! One day at the time plus DO NOT BRING ANY ALCO HOME!!! Ok, I got one more question. One day at the time, but how to kill the thought about ok, Im not drinking today, but what about tomorrow?

setting a future date sounds like a delaying tactic that promotes drinking. You get a free ticket till then guilt free. Then when the day comes it's not right for some reason.

Another view is not to "give up drinking" but to totally and unreservedly embrace sobriety. It can be very scary to do so but it can work.

If you are not quitting forever, than you are not quitting.

Pick different language to describe what you plan to do.

In the beginning, forever wasn't part of the deal. Just for today, I won't drink.

It feels not easy when you think there is something you are not allowed to use....for ever....but others can.
