New here, not to recovery tho
New here, not to recovery tho
Hey everyone, I posted something in the My Story section and Carol recommended I post something here to introduce myself so here goes. I got sober in Southern Calif in 1990 after 3 years of going in and out of AA while attending meetings from time to time and not working the steps. I had the idea I could get sober through osmosis but it didn't happen that way for me.
My bottom was physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Once I made the effort and began taking the steps with the help of my sponsor things started getting better in all those areas. Some people can get sober and stay that way without AA or the steps but not me. I tried doing it on my own and then I tried it with one on one therapy but I kept drinking every few months or so even though I knew drinking would make things a lot worse.
Lots of bad things happened while I drank and used other drugs. I never had a DUI but I landed in jail once for drunk in public and resisting arrest. I had trouble holding a job but I blamed everyone else for my problems.
I've been sober since Dec. 1st, 1990 but all I really have is today. There are no guarantees in this thing I know. I'd like to make a few friends and maybe even help someone if I can. I'm 59, retired and live in Colorado. I was divorced last year and now I live with my two dogs, my best friends for sure!
That's about it for now, I'll leave out the long version of the drunkalog. If a drunk like me can get sober, anyone can. I hope you're all doing well today.
Jim

We are the same age and I sincerely wish I had quit in 1990. In fact 1990 was the start of my heavier drinking. I didn't quit until last year at 58, but better late than never eh! Next month I'll have one year of sobriety, which is a permanent state of mind for me now. Thanks for sharing I'll have to go read your story next.
