Experience with Blackouts?
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had thoughts and experiences they might have with blackouts while drinking? I always blacked out when drinking and don't remember anything afterwards. Do you ever get the memories back? If not, did you ever want to get them back?
Thanks,
J

Depends - some things I remembered with time...but there are still things I have been reliably informed happened that I have absolutely no recollection of, going back twenty years now.
I think that's a blessing really.
Personally, it's great to live my life with no blackouts, no shame, no fear for 4 years now, since I stopped drinking
Whats done is done.

Hi LifeIsCake, I just posted on that subject earlier today: http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...blackouts.html
From what I have read the memories never form so there is no way to get them back.

I was a blackout drinker....it was really risky ..I got into all sorts of dangerous situations and I'm lucky I was not killed.
The good news is...as soon as I quit drinking...the blackouts vanished immediately....
Here is a link to excerpts from the book that was vital to my early recovery...blakouts are discussed there
and while not everything applied to me...a whole lot did...

I drank to blackout almost every single night. Sometimes people would tell me about things I did and they would feel familiar - almost like I could remember them but they were somewhere in a different room in my brain. They felt like things that somewhere in my head I knew I had done. Other things developed slowly over time. But some things I just flat out have absolutely no recollection of. The scariest nights were when I blacked out before I even went out. There are entire nights of drinking I don't even remember leaving to go to the bar for. Thank GOD I don't have to experience those anymore.

Thanks so much to everyone for their responses. It really helped. I really don't want to remember things. I think remembering them would only make me feel worse about the things I've done..
