Blackouts

Blackouts are probably the main thing that scared me straight.

I'm on day 15 of no drinking and it's been really such a relief to remember everything that has happened the last 2 weeks.

I can't help but wonder what I have said or done in the past... there is so much I don't remember.

Yeah, I agree.

Blackouts are terrifying. My anxiety would go through the roof trying to remember something, anything.

Good for you on Day 15!

Boy, I wish my blackouts scared me straight!
I was in such denial and would pretend it didn't happen.

Congrats on 15 days!

I know the feeling ETA. I used to have fragmentary blackouts almost every night sitting at home drinking and watching tv. I remember the beginnings of a show or movie, but I couldn't tell you how any of them ended the next day, even though I'd be sitting there watching it. Blackouts when I was driving are the scariest part...I look back at that now and thank God that I didn't hurt anyone.

I remember very few evening my last 3 years of drinking. Talks with my wife and kids, T.V shows, movies and pretty much anything else that happened after about 7 p.m. was just a hazy blur. It's no way to go through life, that's for sure. I still wonder to this day why my wife put up with it as long as she did.

Hi ETA-

I turned into a blackout drinker during my last 1 1/2 years of drinking. It was very scary and I also totalled two cars and got two duis, both in blackouts.

However, even compared to the wrecks, arrests, jails, the guilt, shame, remorse, and total FEAR was by far the worst. I don't ever, ever want to go back there.

...but since I joined SR and became a member of AA (working all 12 steps with a sponsor), I've stayed sober and I haven't had one blackout.

Kjell~

I read somewhere that sometimes other people don't even realize someone is in blackout because they don't always act totally drunk. I used this to relieve my post-blackout anxiety thinking "oh my boyfriend didn't realize how wasted I was... I blacked out but I know I cooked dinner from the dirty dishes. "

oh boy, I can remember. The scariest thing was when a friend ask me about something the next day and I could not even remember this event happened.

I was a blackout drinker. (I love that I get to say "was.") My husband eventually learned to distinguish when I had "gone dark" even though others wouldn't be able to tell. But I would wake up feeling so ashamed and frightened. It was awful. I am sure that I've quit because of the blackouts.

I love what Kjell says. I've been sober nineteen days and haven't had a single blackout.

I too was a blackout drinker..and ..unlike you...I kept on drinking ..thinking every drinker had them.
The information on blackouts I discovered in 'Under The IInfluence" opened my eyes.

Here is the link to excerpts..includeing blackouts

I'm thrilled they will no longer be part of my life...nor yours.

Blackouts can cause an alcoholic (of every imaginable type) to reconsider drinking ever again. True for some due to no fault of their own don't get it. I got it...and got it good.
