When I was court order to go to AA. I decided to get a couple of sponsors. I really didn't find them very helpful at all. The problem for me was that I didn't know them personal and they would call up out of the blue asking me how I'm doing. It was always weird because they would call when I was working so I could not talk. I stop going to AA and having sponsors because it was not for me. I was better off doing it by myself. At that time I would be sober only for a week. Now I'm at 3 months of being sober. I started over a week ago but I know I will not be doing for at least 3 months. I hope I can hit 6 months this time and even longer.

It really comes down to if you want to quit drinking and what will work for you the best.

Looking back on this thread I realized how much one's own personality has to do with one's success in a program. I think it is harder for people who are more shy to succeed with 12-step programs. People whose alcohol or drug use was social seem to do better. For someone like me who always found the idea of walking into a bar alone and ordering a drink too intimidating to be any fun, and who never had any friends who were alcoholics or addicts--well AA or NA or anyA is going to be a tougher program than for someone who is more comfortable in that world.
